A puff piece? Cannabitch x High Design pick their favorite weed accessories of the moment
Have you ever tucked into a long, sprawling cannabis accessories article only to realize the person writing it probably didn’t use a solid chunk of anything they were endorsing? Happens to the best of us.
Worry not. I realized I was long overdue for an accessories haul. The last was in January 2021, when I urged Cannabitch readers to spend their stimulus checks on weed. Since I was out of weed smoking commission for much of the last year, I thought it best to rely on the experts since I’m just getting back up and going. Clare Sausen has an entire newsletter called
, which is all about cool cannabis accessories. I like her writing and taste, so I asked her to contribute, and here we are with an alternating list. Coincidentally, we doubled up on a couple of brands, which we decided was okay since we organically picked these independently of one another. While Cannabitch and High Design have different things to say about the cannabis industry, we have one very important thing in common: we’re women who weed. Whether it’s for a story or just as fans, we’re always keeping an eye on what’s hot in pot. Here are our current picks. Rest assured, they have been tried and tested. Over and over and over again.
CB: The Venty by Storz & Bickel
I’m on record as being a huge Storz & Bickel fan, especially its iconic Volcano. It was one of the first vaporizers I ever smoked out of and, to this day, remains the best I’ve tried. So it’s no surprise that I’m also a big fan of everything else the brand makes, including its handheld device, The Mighty.
Now enter The Venty. It’s the newest portable dry herb vaporizer by the German vaporizer titans. It takes only 20 seconds to heat up, allowing an airflow of 20l/minute at the maximum stage. It’s also expensive at $449, but as with most things in life, you get what you pay for. And even if it’s not as aesthetically fun as its predecessors—it’s hard to beat a big, inflatable bag of smoke, to be fair—it’s at least sleek-looking. If you’re a frequent toker, it’s worth it for the break on your lungs alone.
HD: OOKA
I had the chance to try the latest innovation in weed technology recently at Grasslands in San Francisco: the OOKA.
While the Volcano has reigned as the ultimate piece of party weed tech for at least the last decade, the OOKA is coming for the throne—and you don’t have to suck vapor out of a plastic bag.
The piece itself looks as if Apple made a hookah: the flameless vessel (offered in just black and white for now) has electronic lights and haptics with a water-filled base and mouthpiece hose. Marketed as “the Nespresso of cannabis,” the smoker just loads a pod into the top and is ready to go at the click of a button.
Take this with a grain of salt, as I’m sure I’ve basically incinerated all of the cilia in my throat by this point, but it was an incredibly smooth hit — so much so, in fact, I wasn’t sure I was getting any at first. I sure was, though: from effects-based pods like “Zone In,” “Happy Hour,” and “Just Vibe” to infused pods with whole flower and live resin, the experience is highly customizable. I asked their brand representative how long the pods typically last, and she said that when she smokes three times a day (my kind of woman), she can use one for 5-6 days. The price tag is high, but if you’re ready to be an early investor in the next big thing, look no further.
CB: High on Plants “The Jackie” earrings
This is totally cheesy, but I’m going to plug something I’m involved in. Not long ago, publicist and influencer Alice Moon posted that she was starting an accessories company with friend and marketing and design entrepreneur Caroline Murphy. Called High on Plants, the brand uses Murphy’s laser cutter to make cannabis leaf-shaped earrings and puzzles, though more are coming. I wondered aloud to Alice, wanna collaborate on a pair of black leather cannabis leaf earrings? The rest is history! “The Jackies” are here now, look great, and come in two sizes (large and small) with gold accents.
Truth be told, I have a tepid history with weed leaf gear. In an age of fashion where peoples’ ingestion takes center stage—entire clothing collections dedicated towards Spanish tapas or Italian aperitivo, for example, or even mushroom-themed baby clothes—I still feel weird about cannabis on clothes. Often, I think the designs are tacky. I’m likely also dealing with internalized stigma, too, to be honest. But mostly, I think past fan leaf designs have been kind of cringe. More Shakedown Street than Champs-Élysées. Which is fine if you're into that! It’s just not me.
So, I feel like this is my attempt to challenge that. Make it all feel pretty in my way. In this case, with black leather and gold accents, which matches how I dress in everyday life. Use code Jackie10 for 10% off anywhere on the site. (The earrings come in other colors, like pink, too! Just black is my collab.)
As a grown adult, there are few respectable ways to hit a gravity bong — besides investing in true feats of German engineering. I’ve argued for the importance of these aesthetically upgraded stoner essentials before, and this is the perfect example.
The Monarch is a new offering from GRAV Labs with a visually pleasing twist on their classic Gravitron shape. Featuring decanter-like details like grooved glass and scalloped edges, this practical glass giant has no doubt drawn inspiration from the vintage bong wave to toe the line between the bar cart and stash bag.
Nothing is a better example of stoner engineering (or hits as hard) as a gravity bong, and I always appreciate an aesthetically-oriented way to appreciate a piece often relegated to the dorm room.
My big issue with a lot of cannabis accessories, in general, is that most of them are too gendered. A lot of women’s accessories are too girly for my taste, and I think they can sometimes be a bit infantilizing. So-called men’s accessories too often are aggressive-looking or not styled at all, which also misses the mark.
A Brutalist-looking ashtray may clock in on both the more masculine and aggressive sides of things for some, but I think the look is chic and gorgeously neutral. San Diego County-based Vessel makes the aptly named “Ash,” which is a 4.1-pound, 6-inch-by-6-inch square concrete ashtray with a fully removable walnut lid. It’s a statement piece that takes up a nice chunk of coffee table real estate, as it should. Certain guests to my home will comment on how cool it is, and truth be told, it’s become a secret tell for me about whom among my crew has good taste. It also comes with a walnut storage tray compatible with the brand’s lighters, bud cases, and more.
(Here’s an unintentionally styled shot of Ricky Williams using Vessel’s Helix one-hitter with the ashtray.)
HD: Edie Parker Glass Tabletop Lighter in Watermelon
I’ve long been in love with the Edie Parker tabletop lighters. As a freelance writer, though, $450 isn’t exactly in the budget — especially for acrylic.
The new iteration of these classic Edie staples, originally inspired by the vintage wares of eras past, are now offered in glass for a cheaper price point (which frankly doesn’t really make sense to me, but I'm here for it). The new model is available for $195 and doubles as an ashtray just like its predecessors, and is available in three art-deco-inspired colorways, including Berry Citrus (purple and yellow), Tropical Blast (orange and blue), and, my favorite, Watermelon (or Chromatica, as I’ve lovingly referred to anything offered in pink and green in the last three years).
CB: Edie Parker Burn Bag in Black Croc
The burn bag is one of those pricey accessories that looks cool, especially on social, but could easily be defective IRL or devolve into a gimmick. With a retractable lighter affixed to the outside of a small, boxy chain-strapped handbag (it also comes as a clutch), it also has the potential to be extremely convenient: not only is a lighter always handy but said lighter being literally attached to a bag prevents people in the rotation from jacking it. Also, let’s face it: smoking will always look cool, health concerns notwithstanding, and part of the reason is that it involves fire.
I love this bag! We’re at a time in human history where we need to seriously re-evaluate our consumption choices, so I like the fact that this luxury bag uses vegan leather (if we were truly eco-conscious, we wouldn’t be buying luxury bags, in general, but whatever). To be honest, I have yet to own a vegan leather anything, including several Telfars, that don’t eventually peel, so it remains to be seen what kind of mileage the Burn Bag has. But it’s patent leather, which tends to have a longer shelf life when treated well.
As for its utility, it is confirmed! Not only does the Burn Bag legitimately solve a need I have (a lighter within arms reach at all times with minimal obstruction), but it’s also a great party trick. I brought it to two weddings already, and the bag’s lighter was a big hit on the dance floor. Also, with my group of girlfriends from high school, with whom I snuck out of the welcome party to rip joints, just like old times (below).
HD: YewYew Jumbo Cloud Grinder in Forest
Once I was first introduced to the concept of a jumbo-sized grinder, nothing was ever big enough again. Sized to fit a substantial scoop (mine’s a bedazzled ⅛ tsp measuring spoon) instead of your pinched fingers, once you go big, you may never go back. For the past few years, I’ve been using Sackville & Co.’s Gilded Grinder, another great choice for the massively inclined, but I do miss the lack of a kief screen available in this two-piece model.
Enter a new option for us constantly on the verge of carpal tunnel: the YewYew Jumbo Cloud Grinder in Forest. It grinds an entire eighth at a time, meaning it’s about as big as you can go without getting ridiculous.
I also love the finish: it’s a rare non-metallic option for a grinder, and the succulent green is a gorgeous option for a pop of color while remaining elegant. It’s also offered in midnight, mauve, and white – which would have been my pick if I didn’t know that the bottom would become caked in buds after a few weeks in my possession. Its bubbly silhouette is both deeply on-trend and ergonomically friendly.
CB: YewYew Wavy Mini Bong in Apple
As a documented bongswoman, I knew I needed to include some glass in this list. While I am trying, however unsuccessfully, to ramp down on lighting shit on fire, the truth is that I just really love bongs.
I’ve also become an extreme nester since having my baby. Since the house has become more my domain, which has never historically been my thing, I’ve decided everything must look AMAZING. That extends to my accessories. I was offered a chance to try Yew Yew’s Wavy Mini bong, which is the kid sister to its beloved, larger Sunset bong, and on looks alone, it was an obvious “yes.”
Not one to necessarily pass up a cute design in the past, I have more often been a function-over-form kind of gal. This marries both: it’s legitimately small and fits in the palm of my hand, making it pretty portable not just around the house but anywhere else. Its wide, short neck and lack of an ice catcher make it easier to clean than other bongs. If you’re an ice person like I am (when I like a little treat…otherwise, I punish myself and go without. I grew up Catholic), the ice goes right in the main belly. The bright, monochrome color schemes make me happy. I’m a simple person.
HD: Woodhouse Pottery Flamingo Pool Floatie Pipe
Summer may be officially ending, but I live in L.A. now, so I’m not pulling out the scarves any time soon.
Speaking of, this small-batch artisan works out of POT LA, a ceramics studio prioritizing people of color, beginners, and the LGBTQ+ community since 2017. I’ve been dying to go to their Pipe Party, a 420-friendly pottery extravaganza to create a functional piece in the motifs of your wildest dreams, ever since I saw a friend fashion a gummy bear bowl a few months back. Woodhouse Pottery’s squeaky summer creations inspire my inner ceramicist even more.
They specialize in quirky yet functional pipes and pieces with a flair for the warm-weather inclined, including donuts, and, of course, a variety of pool floaties. If you’re not a forever summer lover, though, don’t fear – the Poison Apple Pipe gives a beloved classic a spooky twist.
Huge thanks to LA-based writer Clare Sausen of for being down to clown. I wrote her one day out of the blue and said, “Would you like to do an accessories collab?” and she was instantly in without more detail or direction. EXACTLY how I like to roll. She pens the cannabis events column “High Functioning” for Byline, writes for lots of your favorite brands, and has also written for Broccoli Magazine, High Times Magazine, Sackville & Co., Where’s Weed, Honest, Burning Tree, Building Design + Construction Magazine, Medical Construction & Design Magazine, You Are Here, NORML, The Lounge, WRGW Music Blog, and more. She also makes these cool-as-hell lighter cases!
